PLACES FOR FIELD EXCURSION

Two places are proposed for field excursion during the Symposium. A brief description of the places is given here.

Mussoorie hills

Delegates will be able to see outer Himalayan ranges having distinct Shorea robusta, Pinus roxburghii and Cedrus deodara forests across altitudinal gradient as they climb up along roads with sharp curves. Eco-task force battalion of the territorial army has executed eco-restoration and afforestation projects in limestone mining areas and degraded sites on the hills with military like work culture and commitment. An Eco-Park has been created at Dhanaulti at about 2250 altitude amid forest of Cedrus deodara, Rhododendron arboretum and Quercus leucotrichophora trees. The place is managed by Uttarakhand Forest Department with help of self-help group of the local youth.

Rajaji National Park

Located at the Himalayan foothills, near Dehradun, Haridwar and Rishikesh, with Ganga and Song rivers flowing through it, the Rajaji National Park is known for scenic beauty and rich bio-diversity. Elephant, panther, spotted deer, sambhar, wild boar, barking deer, goral, and over 400 bird species make it a great wildlife and bird watching destination. The place has rich flora comprising broadleaved deciduous forests, riverine vegetation, scrub and grasses. Spread over an area of 820 sq km, it is a magnificent ecosystem representing vegetation of several distinct zones and forest types. A paradise for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, this area is the north-western limit of Asian elephants.
