Forest Research Institute (FRI) has its roots in the erstwhile Imperial Forest Research Institute established in 1906 to organize and lead forestry research activities in the country. Its history is synonymous with the evolution and development of scientific forestry not only in India but in the entire Indian subcontinent. In the year 1988, FRI and its research centres were brought under the administrative umbrella of ICFRE. FRI focuses its research on thrust areas like managing forests and forests products for livelihood support and economic growth; biodiversity conservation and ecological security; forests and climate change, and forest genetic resource management and tree improvement.
